Apple’s Subscription Model

Apple’s move to a hardware subscription model is a big step for the company, and raises some big questions for customers. It offers more flexibility than the existing iPhone Upgrade Program, as customers can rent the device they want for as long as they want it, and then hand it back. However, it’s likely to be a more expensive proposition over the long-term, as it incentivizes more frequent upgrades. There are also questions such as what happens if total rental costs exceed the amount they would have paid by buying it on an installment plan? What are the minimum rental terms? And how flexible will it be in terms of both hardware and services? Until Apple releases more details, these questions will remain unanswered.
